Olympic Golf Course Construction

The president of the R&A has a problem with the pace the new Olympic course is being built.  And it has been kind of ridiculous, there's only two years left, and there isn't even any grass down yet.  Everyone wants golf to be this great success at the Olympics, but if the course is in terrible shape, we'll never hear the end of it.  Taking such a significant event to a course so new is just not a particularly good idea.  People had issues with Kiawah when they had the Ryder Cup there in '91 precisely because place was still rough around the edges, and players complained about Bellerive when the 1965 U.S. Open was held there, again, because the place was new and the grass wasn't in great shape.  Everyone wants Olympic golf to be a success, but at this point, I'm not holding my breath.

World Golf Hall of Fame Rules Change

According to Golf.com, the World Golf Hall of Fame is changing how it votes for new members.  This is a good thing, the inductees were getting a little lackluster.  Nothing against Colin Montgomerie or Fred Couples, they had good careers, but neither really did that much for golf.  They just aren't noteworthy enough.  We'll have to see now if the new system can raise the bar a little higher.

Lido Competition

Apparently the 2014 contest was announced a month ago, but since I've just found out about it today, I'll write about it.  The Lido Contest is where average people with an eye for golf course architecture can fulfill their armchair fantasies.  What you do is design a golf hole (a par 3 this year), using the tenets of design preached by Alister Mackenzie, a famous golf course architect, and the winner of the original contest, way back in 1914.  Now, this contest hasn't been going on for that long, but it was revived in 1987.  You can learn about the history of the contest here.  This is a link to this year's contest and the rules.  I've entered a couple times in the past, but not that recently.  I'm definitely entering this year though, it's a fun thing to do, and I'm really bored.  It's the perfect combination.

Introduction

Well, this is my new, golf-exclusive blog.  I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about the sport, its history, the courses, so hopefully I'll have something worth saying here.  Unfortunately I don't live in the warmest of climates, so until I can break the clubs out more consistently, I won't have the opportunity to do much original work.  But I can share my thoughts on everything else going on in the world of golf, so that should be fun.  Right?  Sure it will.
